Dean and friend, Henno Klerk, was killed when the Volkswagen Beetle which they drove from behind at high speed by another car hit, presumably when the car was passing. The Volkswagen on the impact of the collision rolled. A third friend, daemon tools Johann Botha, several injuries but has been released from hospital.
Dean was a first-year student in Multimedia Design at City Varsity in Cape Town. He wrote matric last year at the High School Pro Arte Alphen Park, Pretoria, and during his Grade 12 year in the first place MK TV's nationwide Bruce Lee Stabilo Art Competition for the nose of professional artists and students raptured.

Dean is survived by a younger brother, Dylan, a Grade 12 pupil at Principia College daemon tools in Oudtshoorn, his father, Danie Steyn Nylstroom, his stepfather, Johan Vorster and stepsisters Adeline and Imogen, and grandparents, Mr. Diks and Ms Theron Frances Somerset West and Mr. and Ms. Suzette Danie Steyn Nylstroom.
